OMAR SOSA QUARTETTO AFROCUBANO (CUB)

Omar Sosa – piano, electronic
Leandro Saint-Hill – saxophones, flutes
Childo Tomas – bass
Ernesto Simpson – drums, percussion

Cuban pianist, composer and arranger Omar Sosa is one of the most innovative propagator of the Afro-Cuban tradition. Sosa connect this legacy with other music cultures, also far away from his primary inspiration, as for example Moroccan trans-like gnawa genre or Arabian and Indian music. His ensembles are as eclectic, they combine known names such as Paquito D'Rivera, Trilok Gurtu, Dhafer Youssef, Mino Cinelu or Paolo Fresu. Besides many folk instruments, Sosa is adding some hip-hop elements and electronic effects which stir up some shaman ecstasy and suggestive multifaceted band music.

Such music might be the consequence of the fact that, as an 8-year-old, he started studying percussion at the conservatoire in his hometown Camagüey; after this, he completed his piano studies in 1983 in Havana. His biggest influences are Thelonious Monk and Chucho Valdes. In 1995, he moved to San Francisco, only a year later he published his America debut (solo album) and after that more than twelve renowned and awarded albums. Among other things he was nominated for the Grammy award for seven times, but still remains a well-kept secret of contemporary Cuban music.

The Afro-Cuban quartet has been his steady ensemble for a couple of years, a congenial combination of musicians who understand each other on a telepathic level since their university time and share the love for real and unspoiled African and Cuban music.
